Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue abound. The primary families are the Stark, Lannister, and Baratheon families. Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard Stark to serve as his chief advisor. Eddard, suspecting that his predecessor had been murdered, accepts so that he can investigate further. It turns out more than one family is plotting to take the throne. The Queen's family, the Lannisters, may be hatching an incestuous plot to take control. Across the sea, the last surviving members of the previously deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also plotting a return to power. The conflict between these families and others, including the Greyjoys, the Tullys, the Arryns, and the Tyrells, leads to war. Meanwhile, in the north, an ancient evil awakens. Amidst war and the political confusion, a brotherhood of misfits, The Night's Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and the horrors beyond

I'm keeping as close as possible tabs on this series since I am a fan of the books. I did read yesterday off of twitter that Jennifer was seen filming at Doune Castle in Scotland.
The scene they were filming was a feast to welcome the king's visit to Winterfel.
Not alot to report. I think it was mentioned that her baby was with her. She was wearing a long red wig.

While reading the books I didn't really like Caitlyn but I understood her. She is very protective of her family and is a virtuous wife but she feels bitter toward her husband's illegitimate son.
Caitlyn is admirable for her strength and courage and I think she has the most dramatic scene of the series later on around book 3.

Hiya Pam! and a warm welcome friend to the forum, nice to see a new face around here especially those who like multi-genre fiction. I used to read Gabaldon but unlike Jane Austen it gets pretty predictable as each book continues to the next.
Who is the author? thanks for the info as well as period stuff I do like Medieval sometimes too! Can't remember one I haven't seen!
Hope to see you more around here!

Hello Stella Thanks for the invite and the welcome. :)

The series is written by George R.R. Martin and funny you should mention Gabaldon he has mentioned her on his blog on occasion and they have done a few anthologies together.
I read her Outlander series a few years ago too.

I also wanted to mention that there are two more Austen Alumni in this production.
Joseph Mawle of Persuassion 2007 (Harry) and Tamzin Merchant from 2005 P&P (Georgina).

Joseph plays Benjen Stark who is brother of Ned played by Sean Bean. His character is a black brother (similar to a monk) and is a guard at The Wall which is basically a very long glacial wall of ice.
Tamzin Merchant is Dany, daughter to a prince killed by a usurper king. Her brother played by Harry Lloyd (Will Scarlett of Robin Hood) is trying to regain the throne with the help of Dany's new husband Drogo, played by Jason Mamoa. (stargate atlantis)

The filming has moved to Belfast Ireland.

--I wish I could move there too! Thanks for the info I will certainly make a note of that, and do a feature of both. Funny you mention Sean Bean he was in "Clarissa" a book of Samuel Richardson of whom Jane Austen was a fan. The film and book are a hard read and as Eliza said enough to break your nose if you fall asleep :D. I haven't felt the same way about him (Sean Bean) since then it was pretty graphic I don't recommend it. His books bring out the feminist in me, hard to imagine that Jane Austen actually read his work.
The story itself is interesting do you think a 13 year old would be interested in it? I have a niece who likes fantasy stories if it is suitable for someone that young. Perhaps I will put it on my list for her until I have ordered it for myself.
I have only read a few as I said and her mother is a huge fan of Gabaldon.
It is nice to see her still working as I have heard that some feel after you have done an Austen you are cursed in the acting field? I haven't had that feeling outright as I have been following all of their careers before 07' now and then I check in to see what they are doing.
Jonny Lee Miller whom I did a feature on has had a strange career and seen a lot of what he has been in and was disappointed to see his Eli Stone show get cancelled.

Any thoughts?

I've been kinda busy with the halloween holiday. Now maybe I can dedicate some time here. :)
I haven't read Clarissa but I've seen it. It is one of those movies that I had to think about afterward. Is the movie loyal to the book?

I don't know if Game of Thrones is suitable for a 13 year old or not. You can not get attached to any one character because bad things occur to each one whether it is ultimately death or something else. Cercei (played by Lena Headey) and Jaime (played by Nikolaj Coster Waldau) are incestuous twins. Some parts of the book I would consider horror film material.
Maybe too much realism.

I see your point, as I haven't read it yet but Clarissa is along the same lines as this which as I mentioned perhaps not gothic or horror but the book is slightly different but the scene which was graphic was exactly the same. Which my brows furrow slightly as to why Jane would admire his writing I have tried really hard to grasp as his style of characters and writing is infuriating. I am not a feminist per se but this book or his books really grab you if you can handle reading and being angry and shocked all at the same time. I went as Elizabeth Bennet in P&P and Zombies with my black wig and ninja like wear. As the previous year I went to Celtic New Year as Jane herself.

I wonder why Jane Austen would admire his writing. I thought about reading Pamela which is the novel he wrote before Clarissa. Haven't finished my other reading yet so it will have to wait.
Even without the benefit of knowing his stories first hand, I've developed a cynical view of him as his heroines are so morally just and his males so corrupt. I have wondered if he was exploring some fantasy of his own?? (maybe unfair but I did think that.) Maybe it was just a product of what was being written at the time.
Well I'd discuss it further but I'm hard pressed to avoid spoilers in doing so. :D
Plus, I guess the topic has strayed a bit too. ;)

btw I'm new to the whole P&P and Zombies. Where have I been???

Hiya Pam, it has only been the last year or so these Austen spinoffs have come round except for sequels there are many of those. See the Austen Spinoff section for more information including a quiz on real or zombie quotes.
It will give you some insight into the book, also there is another one I posted combining Austen and C.S. Lewis it is brilliant it is only one chapter though. I hope to get the book itself one day as I love both and the comedy in it is funny!!!:D
I have read Clarissa it is also covered in the Novels and Letters section as is Pamela I am not sure either way as there never has been much writeup on Richardson to grasp his own personality at least I haven't found it yet.
If you can't find anything in the sections try the archives at the bottom right of the webpage you might find some old topics to read up on.

Just when we (fans) get the green light from HBO Jennifer opts out of the series.

sad.

She hasn't said why yet. Hollywood reporter broke this news. I didn't link the story here since I don't recall if links are okay.

Miscellaneous news about Ms. Ehle is she may be on twitter. You decide. I think it is she.

twitname: jenniferehle

I correct myself. It is probably not Jennifer Ehle on Twitter I say this because John Lithgow is NOT following her. They did Mr. & Mrs. FItch together and I think he'd be following her if she was genuine.

oh well.

Must be something wrong with the viewer poll why on earth would they let them both go. There must be something in it perhaps they were being on the cheap. Links are ok as long as it pertains to the forum and subject involved.
You never know about twitter Stephen Fry who is slated to play Mr. Bennet in Jane Austen Handheld in whatever time they intend to release it I am not sure.
As I heard it had been done already so a matter of when and where I hope.
Funny you mention Lithgow would he not have made a perfect Sir William Elliot of Persuasion? Not that Mr. Head did not it just needed that extra something comical.
I have seen Lithgow in previous films and audiobooks and is an excellent reader. Now speaking of readers would I not give heart palpitations to hear Alan Rickman read all the Austen's though he hasn't. Excellent reader of poetry as seen in S&S and others.
Just thought I would mention it since I was viewing S&S for the thousand time on DVD as I felt it were that kind of night.

Stella :)
