Default Nonsensical choreography

Does anyone else cringe at the choreography in historical dramas such as Pride & Prejudice? The BBC's production was marred by the thorough mangling of a whole series of dances, to the point where they were no longer identifiable. What's wrong with keeping the dances as they have always been performed? It's not as if nobody knows them.

Who knows as I doubt that is important to them as the time spent to have the actors learn the dances. Myself I have two left feet and no co-ordination so I can appreciate it when anyone can follow these in any variety. I think for most adaptations perhaps it is the editing that makes it appear that way.
