Jane Austen Centre
Online Newsletter
Issue 24 - February 2007

Dear...

Jackie Herring

The world of Jane Austen on your desktop every month.

Happy Valentines day - if that is your thing.

We've had a hectic month of filming and interviews! The new biopic 'Becoming Jane' has stirred up a mass on interest from the media and for some reason they want to film our staff and get their opinions.

We've four members of staff taking part in a BBC2 programme examining the differences between being a women in the 19th and the 21st centuries. They even filmed a couple of our ladies dressed in Regency attire chatting up the men at a local nightspot! We are all looking forward to having fun watching this one on the TV.

On a more serious note please follow the link to the 'Power of Hands' lace project website in this newsletter. These ladies from Sri Lanka are keeping alive a dying art. They hand produce the lace used in many reproduction costumes such as those created for the ITV film of 'Persuasion'  and are struggling to rebuild their communities after the devastation of the Tsunami.
This project is helping towards making the craftspeople of this area self-sufficient.
You will be hearing more about our association with this project in a later newsletter.

Hi, I'm Jackie

Jackie Herring

*Many thanks again to austenblog and it's contributors for keeping the newsletter informed of some of the many events and happenings in the world of Jane Austen.

 Were you there as well?
Promenaders at last year's Festival

Alison, a member of staff at the Centre saw herself on the cover of ‘Heritage Magazine’ just after Christmas. It turns out that while she was promenading during the 2005 Festival she was an unwitting participant in a professional photoshoot! She didn’t mind though as the shots are fantastic. Go and have a look for yourself. You can download the low resolution shots but will have to pay for the full size images.

Would you like to be involved in the Promenade? Registration details appear further down the newsletter.
