Happy
New Year! In ‘Emma’ Jane wrote; "Never marry! -- This is a
new resolution." Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? I plan
to read more, including a classic per month. I suppose I really ought
to to start with revisiting an Austen, but which one? Read the
newsletter for now, I promise there is no mention of zombies this month!
Donna Lodge
"I have an excessive regard for Jane Bennet”
This
is such a beautiful portrait and wonderful to think that this was how
Jane Austen pictured her Jane Bennet. We may have our own brush with
Jane soon as Rosamund Pike is appearing at The Theatre Royal in Bath
next month. We hope she will call on us . . .
A
gentleman in Oxford has been so inspired by Jane Austen that he has set
up a new society in her honour. If you live in or near Oxford you can
get involved, but why not read this story and set up a society of your
own? If you’ve ever visited the Centre, you may recognize the
backdrop in the photograph!
In
a letter dated February 1812, Fanny Knight writes; ‘On Twelfth
night we had a delightful evening, though not so grand as last year . .
. we played at Oranges and Lemons.’ Discover more and read
other Twelfth Night themed articles in our online magazine.
About
a month ago I had a lovely email from a young lady who had penned a
short story re-write of Emma for her University dissertation. It really
is charming so make yourselves a cup of tea and read on . . . . .

“The prospect of the Netherfield ball was extremely agreeable”

Indeed! We haven’t had a You Tube piece for quite a while so
enjoy this condensed version of 1995’s Pride & Prejudice,
played out to the strains of KT Tunstall’s ‘Hold On’.
Sorry, did someone say “any excuse for a picture of Colin
Firth”?
Several
of you have emailed to ask about the Jane Austen monthly wallpaper that
we featured last January. Although the designs are the same as last
year you can follow this link to download them. Whilst scouring the
worldwide web I found www.fanpop.com. There are some fantastic Austen
themed wallpapers to be found there. See left for my current favourite.
We are always interested in what you think.
