Jane Austen in bath

Discover the years that transformed Jane Austen from an observant young writer into one of Britain’s most perceptive storytellers.

From 1801, Austen made her home in the dazzling spa city of Bath — a place celebrated for its healing waters, elegant assemblies and vibrant social life. Here, amid candlelit ballrooms and morning promenades, she absorbed the rhythms of fashionable society that would later sparkle across the pages of her fiction.

Two of her most beloved novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, are set in Bath, capturing its charm, ambition, gossip and intrigue. As you explore, imagine Austen strolling beneath the sweeping curve of the Royal Crescent, or crossing the elegant Pulteney Bridge over the River Avon — landmarks that still echo with the spirit of the Georgian age.

But Bath offered more than architectural splendour. It provided Austen with a living stage upon which the dramas of class, courtship and reputation played out daily. Her keen observations of social ambition, rigid hierarchies and the quiet resilience of women became defining themes in her work — themes that continue to resonate with readers around the world.

A lovely afternoon

"We spent a lovely couple of hours at the Jane Austen centre. The first learning about Jane and her life here in Bath, the second enjoying a delicious (and filling) 'afternoon tea with Mr Darcy'. Highly recommend - you don't need to be a Jane Austin fan to appreciate the history and the cakes."

Great experience

"Great little museum with lots to read and learn. Really well displayed. There is a good variety of information and a fun place to dress up. I also loved the photos from the film. The staff were lovely and very welcoming."

A worthwhile experience regardless if you're a Austen fan or not.

"Learned alot of things about Jane Austen and how her time in Bath influenced her last two books, learned about her family tree, and got to see the types of clothes that were worn back in the day. I feel the centre is a worthwhile visit regardless if you are an Austen fan or not."
