Jane Austen News - April 2019

What's the Jane Austen News this week?

Jane Austen adaptations filming in the South West
If you're around the South-West of England over the Easter holidays, there's a chance that you might happen across the film crews for two major forthcoming Jane Austen adaptations! In the past couple of weeks, crews for Andrew Davies' adaptation of Sanditon have been spotted filming in and around the seaside town of Clevedon. Austen penned her final novel in the last months of her life in 1817 and the filming suggests that the producers see Clevedon as the perfect place to pose as the fictitious seaside resort in which the novel is set. Meanwhile, it's heavily rumoured that production of the new adaptation of Emma, starring Bill Nighy, is about to start filming in the Cotswolds. A number of famous names have been added to the cast, including Rupert Graves, Callum Turner and Gemma Whelan, who stars as Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones. If you spot any of these film crews, we'd love to see your photos!

Janeites gather in Canberra for Jane Austen Festival Australia
Jane Austen fans from all over Australia (and all around the world) converged last weekend upon Canberra for the Jane Austen Festival Australia. Running for three days, attendees were treated to numerous classes and workshops, featuring skills as varied as bonnet making and Regency era card games. Each night culminated in a gathering in the Albert Hall's ballroom, with the highlight being Saturday's Grand Napoleonic Ball, featuring period music, two large formation dances and a performance of a section of Pride and Prejudice by a guest theatre ensemble. Sounds fabulous! Don't forget that Bath plays host to its very own Jane Austen Festival in October -  find out more here: www.janeaustenfestivalbath.co.uk
Tickets for this year's festival and Regency ball are already on sale and are selling quickly, so if you'd like to come, make sure you buy your tickets quickly!

Vogue chooses its 5 top Austen film adaptations
Manon Garrigues, Culture Writer for the French version of Vogue Online, recently posted her choices of the 5 best Jane Austen film adaptations. We're not going to share spoilers (although we can confirm that Pride, Prejudice and Zombies didn't quite make the cut) - you'll have to go and read her picks here. On a slight tangent, Manon published a touching tribute to Notre-Dame-de-Paris yesterday - seventeen vintage photographs which captured the essence of the cherished cathedral. Our thoughts today are with our readers in France who could only watch as a wonderful part of their culture and history was ravaged by fire. You can view Manon's gallery here.

Photographing the Jane Austen Mega-Fans
The Washington Post recently asked photographers to submit photo essays and received almost 300 submissions. Amongst them was one of the eventual five winners - "Where We Belong" by Alejandra Carles-Torla. In this series of photos, Spanish photographer Alejandra captured members of the Jane Austen Pineapple society as they came together in the UK. You can read more about the project and view the entire photo series in the article here on the Washington Post website.

Jane Austen News is our weekly compilation of stories about or related to Austen. Here we will feature a variety of items, including craft tutorials, reviews, news stories, articles and photos from around the world.

Congratulations to Alejandra Carles-Torla! My brother knows her and showed me the photos quite awhile ago. They’re beautiful and capture the essence of Janeites very well.
